Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen says it will take ‘more than a miracle’ to stop Manchester City winning the title this season.
The Danish international says Spurs, currently seventh, must focus on improving their own position and winning games. But Eriksen doesn’t believe any sort of run they can put together will bridge the gap to Pep Guardiola’s side.
Man City comfortably overcame Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium 4-1 last weekend, Eriksen netting for Spurs in stoppage time at the end of the game.
It means the league leaders have 21 points to spare on Mauricio Pochettino’s men, while City are 11 clear of second-placed Man United after winning 16 consecutive games.
I think you need more than a miracle to catch City.
For Eriksen, the gap is now too much and Spurs, 13/8 for a top-four finish, can only focus on themselves.
“We have shown before, with the team we have and the players we have, that we should have done better, and we could have done better” he told Sky Sports.
“I think you need more than a miracle to catch City, but we are focused on ourselves and trying to come into a better position than we are in now.
“Of course we need to improve a lot but City is a long way ahead.”
Spurs are 11/20 to win at Burnley on Saturday. The Clarets, one point and one place above their visitors, are 6/1 while the draw is 16/5 at Turf Moor. Eriksen is prepared for a tough test.
“We have [had] a week to prepare for Burnley and they are above us, so we need to be in top form,” he added.
