MATCH PREVIEW

Veteran midfielder Aleksandr Samedov has challenged World Cup 2018 hosts Russia to ensure that they at least progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

As a nation on their own Russia have failed to make it out of the group stage of a World Cup, but will be expected by many to do so this summer, having been placed in Group A alongside Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay.

No matter what, we have to get out of the group.

Aleksandr Samedov

They begin their quest for success against Saudi Arabia in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Thursday afternoon, with Samedov determined to try and help the hosts make their mark.

He told the tournament’s official website: “No matter what, we have to get out of the group. We must win our first game, then our second and not leave everything to the last minute.

“I’ve been at three major tournaments before and every time it’s always gone down to the third match for us. Now we have to do everything so it doesn’t come to this.

“I’m confident in my team-mates and I’m confident in myself. We have worked hard and are well prepared.

“We’re not sitting around worrying what will happen if it doesn’t work out for us. We know what we want and where we’re heading.”

Despite the positivity of Samedov, Russia head into the tournament without a win in their last seven games, with Saudi Arabia having lost their last three warm-up games, while the two sides have never previously met.
