England v India – depth pleases Morgan

With England v India approaching starting this week, England T20 captain Eoin Morgan believes his team’s strength in depth in the batting line-up is paying dividends after another white-ball win over Australia.

Having whitewashed their Ashes rivals 5-0 in the recent one-day series, the two rivals clashed at Edgbaston on Wednesday evening in a one-off Twenty20 international.

England v India - depth pleases MorganAgain it was the same outcome as England won the match by 28-runs, thanks largely to the efforts of wicketkeeper Jos Buttler after his move up the order.

Buttler smashed the fastest half-century by an Englishman in T20 history, needing just 22 balls to reach his 50 as he eventually made 61.

Jason Roy (44) and Alex Hales (49) also made valuable contributions as the hosts posted 221-5, nine runs short of their T20 record.

In response, Australia skipper Aaron Finch blasted 84 off 41 deliveries to give the tourists hope but he lost partners regularly and when he fell, the end was nigh.

Australia were eventually dismissed for 193, Adil Rashid taking 3-27 to earn himself the man of the match award.

Morgan says their recent high scores when batting – setting a one-day record against Australia earlier this month – is all down to the talent in their line-up and feels that gives them a chance to win every game.

“With the bat, we started off outstandingly well, with Jos up to the top of the order for us – he and Jason (Roy) really did get us off to a flier, expressing themselves against that new ball,” he told Sky Sports.

“From there, we managed to kick on, didn’t take our foot off the pedal.

We’re lucky at the moment, we probably have six out of the top seven that could open the batting.

“With the likes of (Jonny) Bairstow coming in at number six and Moeen (Ali) at number seven, you can keep going hard.”

England can now look forward to a T20 series against India.
